Guys, I just have a few things to say about this which perhaps weren't originally clear (judging from how terrified everyone is). This is a challenge as much as it is a professional collaboration. You might never have worked for a client in your whole life but you can still put something awesome together for this. You should stop worrying about the crippling prospect of rejection and start working on improving yourself so that you can succeed. Even if you don't end up making the final cut, you should come out of this having done something that challenged you, pushed the limits of your art, and that alone should please you. You're never going to achieve professional quality work if you don't take risks like this. If you want a career in the arts someday and you can't even handle little old me looking at your work, I don't know what to tell you except this: bite the bullet.

What it is: An art compilation of works based on the theme "carnival".
The technical details: I am going to be taking submissions for a full-color 9"x7" (landscape style) art book that will be published through Lulu.com. The book will be sold at the base cost and no profit will be made from it. All submissions must be 2775 x 2175 pixels (300 dpi) minimum. Higher resolution is preferred for better print quality. You do not need to conform to the exact shape of the page, just make sure that either the height or the width is at least 2775 or 2175 pixels. You may submit more than one image, but not all of them may be accepted. All media are welcome, but submissions must be made electronically.
The challenge: The theme of the book is "carnival". How you choose to interpret this theme is up to you. Your inspiration can come from modern carnivals or old-fashioned ones, from Venetian carnivals or Trinidadian carnivals. However, the image you submit must include a character and a background, and that character must be actively doing something. That means they're not just posing for the camera. They're juggling, or making cotton candy, or doing the cootch dance. Whatever. Your image should tell a story. Additionally, for copyright reasons, no fanart is allowed.
Who should submit?: Illustrators who are actually trying to make a career of their art. Because this is a promotional book, hobbyists have no real reason to participate. A panel of professional judges will be put together to help me decide what will make it in to the final book. Only professional-quality images will be accepted. The book must be of such a quality that it can be distributed to potential clients.
Why should I submit? Because this is the sort of thing that looks nice on a resume. Beyond that, if your art makes it in to the book, you'll have something to leave behind when you go on those interviews with local firms. You'll have something to distribute at cons. You'll have something to give your grandma for her birthday. And even if you don't make it in, you'll have challenged yourself and you'll be left with a lovely piece of art at the end of it. This is a good introduction to the process of being an illustrator, to getting a list of requirements and meeting them skillfully. If it seems like it's too hard for you, then you should probably be giving it a try. That's how you improve, you know.
How to submit:
Send an e-mail to pana . stamos @ gmail . com with the image(s) you're submitting (in .jpg, .png, or .tif format).
On the subject line, put the word Carnival.
In the body, include the following:
Your Name: (as you want it to appear in the book)
Your E-Mail Address: (required; you want companies to be able to contact you)
Your Website: (if you have one... if not, why don't you?!)
Your Location: (city, state, country)
The Title of Your Piece: (if you just name it "carnival", I'll slap you)
Medium: (digital, watercolor, mixed...)
Note: By submitting to the book, you are giving legal permission to print your work in this book and to use your work to promote this book. You still retain full rights to your art and have the ability to show, publish, sell, and distribute your art on your own.
The deadline: SEPTEMBER 18, 2006. That is plenty of time, people. Mark your calendars.

Edit (06.03.06): The dimensions of the book have been changed from square to landscape. I doubt this will affect much, since none of you probably have finished pieces yet.
